THE BLACK COAT is an interactive installation where visitors are invited to try on a coat that responds to gesture.
Dressing oneself, a universal daily act, here becomes an act of creation.
Silent on its own, the coat wakes the moment someone wears it. Hidden sensors, woven invisibly into the garment and its detachable pieces, the sleeve, the pocket and the collar, sense touch, gesture, and connection. In front of a mirror, it draws participants to move naturally.
Each piece holds its own voice. The sleeve releases the recorded texture of wool. The pocket triggers rhythm. The collar opens into a sustained tone. The coat tunes itself to a fundamental note, chosen for each person who wears it. As the wearer moves, adds, or removes a piece, their gestures shape the sound in real time, shifting its texture and resonance.
Reimagined here as genderless and loose-cut, designed to be accessible and inclusive, and free of chromatic distraction, the coat reflects the colour of personality: the more expressive someone moves, the busier and denser their sound becomes, while quieter, more hesitant gestures shape sparser ambiance. Every wearer becomes the composer of their own reflection.
